Interactive learning outperforms passive re-reading because it forces retrieval, surfaces gaps immediately, and keeps attention on the task.
Interactive learning, meaning any activity where a student must respond, answer, or act rather than simply read or watch, tends to produce stronger and longer-lasting understanding than passive revision such as re-reading notes or replaying a video. The reason is not that passive revision is useless, but that it creates a comfortable illusion of progress without demanding the mental effort that actually builds memory.
This distinction matters most in subjects with a lot of cumulative content, such as the sciences, where a gap in one topic can quietly undermine understanding of several later ones. Catching that gap through interactive practice, rather than discovering it during an exam, is one of the clearest practical benefits interactivity offers.
The illusion of fluency
When a student re-reads a page of notes for the third time, the material feels increasingly familiar. That familiarity is easy to mistake for mastery. Psychologists call this the fluency illusion: the ease of processing something you have seen before feels like knowledge, even when the ability to recall it independently, without the text in front of you, has not actually improved.
Interactive tasks break this illusion quickly. A flashcard, a short-answer worksheet, or a quiz question forces a student to produce an answer from memory rather than recognise one on a page. If the answer does not come, the gap is obvious immediately, rather than being masked until an exam.
What the research on retrieval practice suggests
Research on retrieval practice consistently finds that the act of recalling information, even when it is effortful or the answer is initially wrong, strengthens memory more than additional exposure to the same material. This is sometimes called the testing effect. It is one of the more robust findings in learning science, and it holds across subjects, age groups, and formats, from simple flashcards to full-length practice papers.
Struggling to recall an answer, and getting it wrong, often does more for long-term memory than reading the correct answer twice.
This is counterintuitive to many students, who understandably prefer revision methods that feel smooth and confidence-building. Interactive practice can feel harder and slower in the moment precisely because it is doing more work.
