Independent, dependent, and control variables explained clearly, with a worked example showing why mixing them up costs marks.
Almost every mark lost on experiment-based exam questions traces back to confusion about variables. It sounds like a small, technical detail, but understanding exactly what each type of variable does is the difference between a fair, meaningful experiment and one whose results cannot really be trusted.
The independent variable
The independent variable is the one thing the experimenter deliberately changes. It is chosen in advance and set to specific values, such as different temperatures, different concentrations, or different light intensities. Everything about the experiment is designed around testing how changes in this one factor affect the outcome.
The dependent variable
The dependent variable is what is measured in response to the change in the independent variable. It is called "dependent" because, if the hypothesis is correct, its value depends on the independent variable. In a photosynthesis experiment, if light intensity is the independent variable, the rate of oxygen bubble production might be the dependent variable, since it is the outcome being observed and recorded.
Control variables
Control variables are everything else that could plausibly affect the dependent variable and must therefore be kept constant. If temperature, carbon dioxide concentration, and plant species are all allowed to vary alongside light intensity, it becomes impossible to say which factor actually caused any change in oxygen production. Control variables are not the interesting part of the experiment, but without carefully managing them, the result of the interesting part means very little.
Control variable versus control group
These two terms are often confused. A control variable is a factor kept constant throughout the experiment. A control group, by contrast, is a separate set-up that receives no treatment at all, used as a baseline for comparison. A drug trial might keep dosage timing constant across all participants (a control variable) while also including a group given a placebo instead of the drug (a control group), so that any effect of simply taking part in the trial can be separated from the effect of the drug itself.
A worked example
Imagine testing how the concentration of a fertiliser solution affects plant growth. A well-designed version of this experiment might look like the following.
Independent variable: concentration of fertiliser solution applied to each plant
Dependent variable: height of the plant after two weeks
Control variables: s…
