Why the number of hours you study matters less than how you spend them, and what to change.
Many students believe that more hours spent with a textbook open automatically means more learning. In practice, the relationship between time and understanding is far less direct. Two students can sit for the same three hours and walk away with very different levels of preparation, simply because one spent that time *actively* engaging with the material while the other passively skimmed it.
Why longer sessions can be misleading
A long study session feels productive because it is tiring. Fatigue is often mistaken for progress. But time on task is only a rough proxy for learning, and it says nothing about whether the information is being processed in a way that supports long-term memory. Rereading notes, highlighting textbooks, and copying out definitions all feel like work, yet they involve very little of the mental effort that actually builds durable knowledge.
This is not an argument against putting in effort. It is an argument for directing that effort towards methods that are known to work, rather than methods that simply feel comfortable.
What "smart" studying actually looks like
Prioritise retrieval over review
Instead of rereading a chapter, close the book and try to write out everything you remember, then check what you missed. This process, often called retrieval practice, forces the brain to reconstruct information rather than simply recognise it. It is harder, and that difficulty is exactly why it works: the effort of recalling something strengthens the memory pathway more than passively looking at it again.
Work in focused blocks, not marathons
Attention naturally declines after a period of sustained concentration. Rather than pushing through a four-hour block with a phone nearby, shorter, focused sessions of around twenty-five to fifty minutes, followed by a genuine break, tend to produce better results. The break is not wasted time; it allows the mind to consolidate what has just been learned before moving on to something new.
Interleave your subjects and topics
It can feel more organised to study one topic exhaustively before moving to the next, but mixing related topics or subjects within a single session (a technique called interleaving) can improve the ability to distinguish between concepts and apply the right method to the right problem, which is exactly what exams demand.
Test yourself before you feel ready, rather than waiting until you feel confident.
