A practical guide to preparing for IGCSE Biology, covering paper structure, topic coverage, command words and revision priorities in the final weeks.
IGCSE Biology rewards students who combine broad topic coverage with precise use of scientific language. The content spans cell biology, transport, nutrition, respiration, coordination, reproduction, inheritance and ecology, and most papers expect you to move quickly between these areas within a single sitting. A sensible plan for preparation is not just to read notes on each topic, but to actively practise recalling and applying them under timed conditions.
Understand how your papers are structured
Most IGCSE Biology qualifications assess students through a mix of multiple choice questions and longer structured questions, alongside a paper (or set of questions) that tests practical skills such as planning, observation and data handling. Before you start heavy revision, check exactly which papers you are sitting, how long each one lasts and how marks are distributed. This shapes how you allocate your revision time across content knowledge and practical technique.
Structured questions typically increase in demand as they progress. Early parts often test recall of a fact or definition, while later parts ask you to apply that knowledge to an unfamiliar context, interpret data or explain a process in sequence. Recognising this pattern helps you avoid rushing the easier marks and running out of time before reaching the higher-value questions.
Build a topic by topic revision map
Rather than revising in the order topics were taught, group them by theme and revisit each one multiple times over several weeks. A useful map covers areas such as:
Cell structure and organisation, including the differences between plant and animal cells
Movement of substances: diffusion, osmosis and active transport
Nutrition and digestion, including enzyme action and the roles of different organs
Respiration and gas exchange, both aerobic and anaerobic
Transport in plants and animals, including the heart, blood vessels and xylem/phloem
Coordination and response, covering the nervous system and hormones
Reproduction, inheritance and variation
Ecology and the interdependence of organisms
Revisiting each topic more than once, with a gap in between, is far more effective than reading through your notes once and moving on. This spaced approach helps information move into longer-term memory rather than fading within days.
