How to approach IB Biology HL revision, from managing the extended content and Internal Assessment to building strong data analysis and essay-style exam technique.
IB Biology at Higher Level asks more of students than most other pre-university biology courses, not only because of the volume of content but because of how it is assessed. You are expected to recall detailed content, apply it to unfamiliar data, and often write extended, structured responses that read almost like short essays. Preparing well means treating these as separate skills that each need dedicated practice.
Recognise the different demands of HL content
HL Biology builds on core topics such as cell biology, molecular biology, genetics, ecology and evolution, and adds further depth in areas like nucleic acids, metabolism, plant biology and animal physiology. A common mistake is to revise HL-only topics separately from the core, when in reality exam questions frequently expect you to connect ideas across both. Understanding how cellular respiration links to gas exchange, or how gene expression connects to inheritance, tends to matter more than memorising isolated facts.
Treat data analysis as its own skill
A significant portion of IB Biology papers presents you with graphs, tables or experimental scenarios you have not seen before. These questions are testing whether you can apply your biological knowledge to new information, not whether you have memorised a specific graph from class. Useful habits include:
Reading axis labels and units carefully before interpreting any trend
Describing trends in data using specific figures where possible, not vague terms like *increases a lot*
Linking patterns in the data back to the underlying biology rather than only describing the shape of a graph
Checking whether a question asks you to describe a trend, explain it, or evaluate the method that produced it
Prepare properly for extended response questions
Paper 2 style questions at HL often include a longer written response worth a substantial number of marks. These are marked against a levels-based approach, where breadth of relevant content, accuracy and clear scientific communication all matter. A strong answer usually has a logical structure: it addresses the command term directly, uses correct terminology throughout, and includes named examples or specific detail rather than general statements.

Identify exactly what the command term is asking for before you start writing
Plan two or three key points briefly before writing full sentences
Support each point with named structures, processes or specific detail
