A practical approach to planning and writing longer, extended response questions in Biology exams, including structure, terminology and common pitfalls.
Extended response questions tend to worry students more than any other part of a Biology paper, largely because they feel closer to essay writing than science. In reality, they reward a fairly consistent set of habits: understanding what is being asked, planning briefly before writing, and using precise scientific language throughout. Once you have a repeatable approach, these questions become far more manageable.
Start by decoding the question fully
Longer questions often combine more than one command term, or ask you to cover several linked ideas within a single response. Before writing anything, read the question twice and identify every part it is asking you to address. It is easy to answer only the first half of a question convincingly and forget the second half entirely, which caps your mark regardless of how well the rest is written.
Plan before you write
A short plan, even just a few words per point, makes a noticeable difference to the clarity of your final answer. Planning helps you avoid repeating the same idea in different words, and ensures you cover a reasonable spread of relevant content rather than writing at length about a single point.
A simple planning method
Underline or note the command term and every distinct part of the question
List three or four key points you could make, in short phrases
Order the points so related ideas sit together
Write in full sentences, expanding each point with named detail
Use topic vocabulary precisely
Extended response questions are marked on scientific accuracy as much as overall argument. Vague, everyday language such as *the body reacts* or *this helps the cell* rarely earns credit compared with specific terminology like **homeostasis**, **active transport** or **negative feedback**. Where you can name a structure, hormone, enzyme or process specifically, do so rather than describing it indirectly.
A shorter answer using correct, specific terminology usually scores higher than a longer answer written in general language.
Structure your response logically
A well-structured extended response usually moves through ideas in a sensible order: from cause to effect, from structure to function, or in the sequence a biological process actually occurs. Jumping between unrelated points can make even accurate content harder for an examiner to credit, because the connections between your ideas are not clear.
Group related ideas into the same paragraph or section
Use linking phrases such as *this cau…
