Technology has changed how students access materials, practise, and get feedback, though the underlying principles of effective revision remain the same.
Technology has changed revision in three main ways: it has made materials available on demand instead of tied to a physical textbook or classroom, it has made active practice faster and more frequent through digital flashcards and quizzes, and it has made feedback close to immediate rather than something students wait days for. What technology has not changed is which revision methods actually work.
None of these changes are dramatic on their own. Taken together, though, they represent a meaningful shift in what a typical revision session looks like: shorter, more frequent, more targeted, and followed by feedback close enough in time to still be useful.
From fixed materials to on-demand access
A generation ago, revising a topic meant finding the right page in a textbook, a set of handwritten notes, or a photocopied worksheet, all of which were tied to a physical location and a single copy. Digital platforms have removed that constraint. A student can now revise the same topic from a phone on a bus, a laptop at home, or a shared computer at school, without losing access to notes, worksheets, or past practice.
This shift matters less for convenience alone and more for consistency: students are more likely to fit in short revision sessions when materials are always within reach, and short, frequent sessions tend to support retention better than long, infrequent ones.
From bulk practice to targeted practice
Paper-based revision typically meant working through an entire worksheet or past paper regardless of which questions a student actually needed practice on. Digital tools make it far easier to isolate weaker topics: a flashcard deck can be filtered to the cards a student keeps getting wrong, and a worksheet can be regenerated to focus on a specific sub-topic rather than an entire unit.
What this looks like in practice
Flashcards that resurface based on how confidently a student answered them previously
Worksheets organised by specific syllabus points rather than broad topics
Quick checks that flag a weak area before a student moves on to new material
From delayed feedback to immediate feedback
Perhaps the most significant change is speed of feedback. A worksheet marked by hand might return to a student a week later, by which point the specific reasoning behind an answer has often been forgotten. Automated or semi-automated marking can return that feedback within seconds or minutes, while the question is still fresh in the student's mind.
