Most students who underperform relative to their effort are not lacking in dedication. They are usually spending real time on revision, but that time is being absorbed by habits that feel productive without actually building the kind of knowledge exams demand. Recognising these habits is often the fastest route to improvement, faster even than simply studying for longer.
Mistaking activity for learning
Highlighting a textbook, copying out notes, or rereading a chapter all produce a visible trace of effort: coloured pages, a fuller notebook, a sense of having "done" the topic. None of these activities, on their own, require the brain to retrieve information without help, which is the process most closely linked to durable memory. The result is a common and frustrating pattern: a student who feels well prepared going into an exam but struggles once asked to produce answers unaided.
Specific mistakes worth watching for
Leaving revision until the last minute
Starting revision only in the days immediately before an exam removes the option of spacing sessions apart, which is one of the most reliable ways to make memory stick. Cramming can produce a passable result in the short term, but it rarely survives more than a few days, which becomes a serious problem in subjects where later topics depend on earlier ones.
Studying only what feels comfortable
It is natural to spend more time on topics that already feel familiar, since progress there feels rewarding. This often means the topics causing the most difficulty, which are usually the ones costing the most marks, receive the least attention. A more effective approach is to use practice questions to identify weak areas honestly, then direct extra time towards those areas specifically.
Ignoring past papers until close to the exam
Past papers are sometimes treated as a final check rather than a core study tool, saved for the last week before an exam. Used earlier, they reveal exactly how knowledge is tested, including command words, common question formats, and the level of detail expected in an answer. Leaving them too late means this information arrives after most revision decisions have already been made.
Multitasking during study sessions
