A look at widespread misconceptions in Biology, from confusing breathing with respiration to misunderstanding evolution, and how to correct them before exams.
Some of the most persistent mistakes in Biology exams come not from a lack of study, but from genuine misconceptions that get reinforced over time. Once a misunderstanding is embedded, it can affect answers across several different topics, since Biology concepts are so interconnected. Identifying and correcting these early is often more valuable than additional general revision.
Confusing respiration with breathing
One of the most common misconceptions is treating respiration and breathing as the same process. Breathing, or ventilation, is the physical movement of air in and out of the lungs. Respiration is a chemical process occurring inside cells that releases energy from glucose. Students who conflate the two often struggle to answer questions about anaerobic respiration, since it happens without a breath being involved at all.
Believing plants only photosynthesise and do not respire
Because photosynthesis is such a dominant topic when discussing plants, students sometimes assume plants do not respire, or only respire at night. In reality, plants respire continuously to release energy, while photosynthesis only occurs when light is available. Both processes happen at the same time during daylight hours.
Thinking evolution happens to individuals
A very common misconception is describing evolution as something that happens to a single organism during its lifetime, such as an animal *developing* a longer neck because it needs one. Evolution by natural selection actually describes a change in a population over many generations, driven by variation, selection pressure and differential survival and reproduction, not a change within one individual's lifetime.
Individuals do not evolve during their own lifetime. Populations change gradually over many generations through natural selection acting on existing variation.
Assuming osmosis and diffusion are the same process
Diffusion and osmosis are closely related but not identical, and students frequently use the terms interchangeably. Diffusion describes the net movement of particles from an area of higher concentration to lower concentration. Osmosis specifically describes the movement of water molecules across a partially permeable membrane, from a region of higher water potential to lower water potential.
