Better revision resources are clear, connected to practice, sequenced sensibly, and designed around how memory actually works.
Building better revision resources starts with a simple shift in perspective: a resource is not finished when it explains a topic clearly. It is finished when a student can use it to find out what they do not yet know, and then do something about it. That single requirement changes almost every design decision that follows.
The rest of this article works through what that shift means in practice, across four areas: how explanations are written, how practice is connected to them, how resources are sequenced over time, and how gaps in understanding are made visible rather than hidden.
Clarity comes first, but it is not the finish line
Clear explanations remain essential, particularly for STEM subjects where a single misunderstood step can derail an entire chain of reasoning. Good notes should use plain language, define technical terms the first time they appear, and use diagrams where a visual makes a relationship clearer than a paragraph would.
But clarity alone produces recognition, not recall. A student can read a beautifully written explanation of osmosis and still fail to reproduce it under exam conditions three weeks later, because reading is not the same skill as retrieving.
Connect every explanation to practice
The most important structural decision a resource designer can make is placing practice material, such as flashcards or short worksheets, directly next to the explanation it relates to. When practice is separated from explanation by a different folder, tab, or website, many students simply never make the trip.

Sequence resources around how memory works
Research on spaced repetition consistently shows that revisiting material at increasing intervals produces stronger long-term retention than cramming the same amount of practice into a single session. Resources built with this in mind should make it easy to return to older topics, not just move forward through new ones.
A resource library organised only by "what comes next" quietly discourages the one habit that helps retention most: coming back.
